Old Fashioned Rolled Sugar Cookie Recipe

These old-fashioned rolled sugar cookies are soft, buttery, and perfect for decorating. This classic recipe creates cookies with a tender crumb and a smooth surface, making them ideal for frosting, sprinkles, or enjoying plain with a cup of tea.

Ingredients

For the Cookie Dough:
  • 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups (300 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract (optional, for added flavor)
  • 3 cups (375 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
For Decoration (Optional):
  • Royal icing or frosting
  • Sprinkles, colored sugar, or edible glitter

Step 1: Make the Cookie Dough

  1. Cream the Butter and Sugar
    • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy (about 2–3 minutes).
  2. Add the Eggs and Flavorings
    • Beat in the eggs, one at a time, until fully incorporated.
    • Mix in the vanilla extract and almond extract, if using.
  3. Combine Dry Ingredients
    • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Mix the Dough
    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing just until the dough comes together. Avoid overmixing, as this can make the cookies tough.

Step 2: Chill the Dough
