Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Step 1: Make the Steak Patties

  1. In a bowl, mix all steak ingredients (except oil).
  2. Form into 4 oval patties.
  3. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high.
  4. Sear patties on both sides until browned (about 3–4 minutes per side).
  5. Remove and set aside.

Step 2: Make the Onion Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter.
  2. Add sliced onions (and mushrooms if using). Cook for 8–10 minutes until golden and soft.
  3. Stir in flour and cook 1 minute.
  4. Gradually whisk in beef broth to avoid lumps.
  5. Add Worcestershire, season with salt & pepper, and bring to a simmer.

Step 3: Simmer the Steaks

  1. Return patties to the skillet.
  2. Spoon gravy over them, cover partially, and simmer for 15–20 minutes, until fully cooked and gravy thickens.

Serve With:

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Rice, egg noodles, or buttered peas
  • Crusty bread to mop up the gravy
  • A glass of iced tea or red wine

Tips:

  • For extra tenderness, don’t overmix the ground beef
  • Add a splash of cream to the gravy for richness
  • Let the patties rest in gravy before serving to absorb flavor
