Step 1: Make the Steak Patties
- In a bowl, mix all steak ingredients (except oil).
- Form into 4 oval patties.
- Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high.
- Sear patties on both sides until browned (about 3–4 minutes per side).
- Remove and set aside.
Step 2: Make the Onion Gravy
- In the same skillet, melt butter.
- Add sliced onions (and mushrooms if using). Cook for 8–10 minutes until golden and soft.
- Stir in flour and cook 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in beef broth to avoid lumps.
- Add Worcestershire, season with salt & pepper, and bring to a simmer.
Step 3: Simmer the Steaks
- Return patties to the skillet.
- Spoon gravy over them, cover partially, and simmer for 15–20 minutes, until fully cooked and gravy thickens.
Serve With:
- Mashed potatoesÂ
- Rice, egg noodles, or buttered peas
- Crusty bread to mop up the gravy
- A glass of iced tea or red wine
Tips:
- For extra tenderness, don’t overmix the ground beef
- Add a splash of cream to the gravy for richness
- Let the patties rest in gravy before serving to absorb flavor
