Classic Empanada Recipe

Golden, crispy, and bursting with savory filling—Latin comfort food at its finest.

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, diced
  • 1 egg
  • ⅓ cup ice water (plus more as needed)
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar or lemon juice

Shortcut? You can also use pre-made empanada discs or pie crust dough!

For the Filling (Beef Style):

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ red bell pepper, diced (optional)
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp chili powder or cayenne (optional for heat)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • ¼ cup tomato sauce or 2 tbsp tomato paste + splash of water
  • 2 tbsp chopped green olives (optional, but authentic)
  • 2 hard-boiled eggs, chopped (optional)
