Classic Patty Melt

Step 1: Prepare the Beef Patties

  1. Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and form each into a thin patty. Season both sides with salt and pepper. Optionally, mix a little Worcestershire sauce into the beef for added flavor.
  2. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes per side or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.

Step 2: Caramelize the Onions

  1. In the same skillet, add 1 tablespoon of butter and reduce the heat to medium-low. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt, and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are deeply caramelized and golden brown, about 20-25 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Step 3: Assemble the Patty Melts

  1. Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. On the non-buttered side of four slices, place a slice of cheese, followed by a beef patty, a generous helping of caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and finally, top with another slice of bread, buttered side up.
  2. If desired, spread a thin layer of mustard or Thousand Island dressing on the inside of the bread before assembling for extra flavor.

Step 4: Cook the Patty Melts

  1. Heat a clean skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet, pressing them down slightly with a spatula.
  2. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is toasted to a golden brown and the cheese has melted. You may need to cook them in batches depending on the size of your skillet.

Step 5: Serve

  1. Once cooked, remove the patty melts from the skillet and let them rest for a minute before cutting. This helps the cheese set slightly and makes them easier to cut.
  2. Cut each patty melt in half and serve hot.

Tips:

  • For an even juicier patty, consider adding a small amount of minced garlic or onion powder to the ground beef mixture.
  • Ensure the onions are cooked on a low enough heat to caramelize without burning, adding a splash of water to the pan if they start to stick.
  • The key to a great patty melt is the rye bread and Swiss cheese, but feel free to experiment with different types of bread and cheese to find your favorite combination.

Enjoy your Classic Patty Melt with a side of pickles, potato chips, or a simple salad for a complete and satisfying meal.
