Making the Doughnuts:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until the yeast becomes frothy.
- Add the sugar, eggs, flour, salt, and softened butter to the bowl with the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Alternatively, you can use a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air bubbles. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/2-inch thickness.
- Using a doughnut cutter or two round cookie cutters (one large and one small), cut out doughnuts and transfer them to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Reroll any scraps and repeat until all the dough is used.
- Cover the doughnuts with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until they have doubled in size.
- While the doughnuts are rising, preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Once the doughnuts have risen, carefully place them in the preheated air fryer basket in a single layer, making sure they are not touching. You may need to cook them in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
- Air fry the doughnuts for 5-7 minutes, flipping halfway through, or until they are golden brown and cooked through. Transfer them to a wire rack to cool slightly.
Making the Glaze:
- In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Dip each slightly cooled doughnut into the glaze, coating it completely. Allow any excess glaze to drip off before transferring the doughnuts back to the wire rack to set.
- Let the glaze set for a few minutes before serving.
