Basic Bread Baking Recipe

1. Activate the Yeast

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This indicates the yeast is active.

2. Mix the Dough

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  2. Add the activated yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a sticky dough forms.

3. Knead the Dough

  1. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
  2. Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes, adding a little flour as needed, until it is smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-7 minutes.

4. First Rise

  1. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap.
  2. Let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.

5. Shape the Dough

  1. Punch down the dough to release air bubbles.
  2. Shape it into a loaf by flattening it into a rectangle, rolling it tightly, and pinching the seams.
  3. Place the dough into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.

6. Second Rise

  1. Cover the loaf with a towel and let it rise again for 30-45 minutes, or until it puffs up slightly above the edge of the pan.

7. Bake the Bread

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and it sounds hollow when tapped.
  3. Remove the bread from the pan and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Tips for Success

  • Flour Type: Bread flour creates a chewier loaf, while all-purpose flour makes a softer loaf.
  • Crispy Crust: For a crustier loaf, place a pan of water on the bottom rack of the oven during baking.
  • Storage: Store cooled bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage.

Variations

  • Herb Bread: Mix in 1-2 tablespoons of dried herbs like rosemary, thyme, or basil.
  • Whole Wheat: Replace half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour.
  • Sweet Bread: Add 2 tablespoons of honey or extra sugar for a slightly sweet loaf.

Baking bread at home is rewarding and creates a loaf that’s fresher and tastier than store-bought!
